The Effects of Job Characteristics on the Life Satisfaction of Elderly Workers: Mediated Effect of Job Satisfaction and Gender Multiple Group Analysis

Abstract
This study aimed to define the structural relationship between the job characteristics and life satisfaction of elderly workers, to analyze the mediated effects of job satisfaction and to determine if the paths of the structural model are affected by the genders of the elderly workers. For this study, the data of 1,972 paid workers and self-employed people who were 55 years old or over were utilized, among the second basic data of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) by Korea Labor Institute. It was found in the analysis that earned income, number of working days, physical job demand, and job demand related to job contents directly and indirectly affect life satisfaction, as mediated by job satisfaction. Thus, it was confirmed that job satisfaction is a significant factor for life satisfaction, with a great explanation ability, and that the paths of the structural equation model vary with life satisfaction according to the genders of the elderly workers. The implication of this study is that it is important to increase the job satisfaction of elderly workers to improve their life satisfaction, and that, for this, an approach tailored to the genders of the elderly workers should be used.
